July 24, 2009, a Friday
Valdez, Alaska, USA
— Photographed Mineral Creek
Had a normal breakfast. There was solid overcast with occasional light rain. Worked on this website to include URL's for the images on my photography website and made the images clickable. I also added some more functionality to the back end of this website to facilitate maintenance. Talked with J about the travel schedule.

Had lunch and worked on this website some more. There was still solid overcast with occasional light rain, so I changed into outside shooting gear (boots and waterproof pants and jacket) and we departed in the Jeep at 2:00.

We went up the road along Mineral Creek, J's special spot in Valdez which I had never been to before. (She had learned about it from her photographer friend Doug Lloyd.) The road follows the Mineral Creek valley and goes past several nice waterfalls and cascades that feed into Mineral Creek. We went as far as the road would allow, then turned around and stopped to photograph the best set of cascades. About 25 yds upstream from the road, there was a nice cluster of dwarf fireweed right along the cascades. I set up to photograph with the 24 TS (tilt shift) so I could get the flowers and the cascades all in focus using the tilt function of the lens. I also used a 3-stop ND (neutral density) filter to reduce the shutter speed and a polarizer to reduce some of the glare from the wet rocks. It took lots of patience to capture the image to the left because there was an intermittent light breeze that would disturb the flowers. We had a lot of fun photographing along that section of stream, even with the occasional light rain.

We got back to the RV around 5:50. I downloaded images from the afternoon and did a first quick edit.

Had dinner at 7:10 of J's sausage sauce over penne pasta with a side of corn.

I started to charge the 1Ds Mk II battery which had been flashing to indicate that it was extremely low for about half of the time I was photographing this afternoon. Had some Asbach Uralt, a German brandy, while working on blog entries.
