September 10, 2009, a Thursday
Homer (Castaway Park), Alaska, USA
— Breakfast out and waiting in Homer
I awoke and started thinking about what to include in an email to Gary Lyon about travel in South Africa. I got out of bed and started working on the email. There was solid overcast outside. J started making her mother's vegetable beef soup in the crock pot — yet another nice thing about being plugged into shore power. We left at 8:43 in the Jeep.

We went to the Duncan House restaurant at 8:55 for breakfast. We both had a Denver Omelet, J with whole wheat toast and me with sourdough. The omelets were OK, but the hash browns weren't anything to write home about — J said they tasted fishy. We left at 9:57.

I dropped J off at the Safeway, then went to a bank to deposit a check. I went back to Safeway and went inside to pick up J.

We returned to the RV around 10:30. I finished the email to Gary then paid for two more additional nights here at Castaway Park.

Had lunch around 12:30 of my usual ham-and-Swiss on rye with some Coca Cola Classic, a banana, and a red delicious apple. I processed some images, then worked up a blog entry. A whole line of about 25 RVs pulled into the Heritage RV Park across the street as part of a group. I sure wish we could travel that way and have strawberry shortcake soirées — not! (Thanks to G of G&L for the classy "strawberry shortcake soirée" expression. J had been fond of using "shuffleboard contests and potlucks" to describe detestable activities at RV parks.) It started to rain lightly.

We had dinner at 6:45 of the fresh vegetable beef soup and Texas Toast. My mother called while we were eating to let us know that she'll be having surgery next Wednesday for her just-diagnosed squamous cell carcinoma on her leg. We had some mint chocolate chip ice cream and chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

Had some Aalborg Akvavit while selecting and processing images for the blog.
