September 23, 2009, a Wednesday
W of Stone Mountain Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada
— The Alaska Highway: Stone Sheep and Woodland Caribou
It was clear and 39°F (4°C) when I got out of bed. I got some Kroger granola cereal from the Jeep to have with the mixed UHT and real milk. (You may read more about UHT milk on my blog entry for September 1, 2009.) The cereal was old, so the combination wasn't that great. Made LavAzza coffee to go. We left in the Jeep at 8:40 and ...

Headed into Stone Mountain Provincial Park. We stopped for some uncooperative woodland caribou by the road, then stopped again to photograph a stone sheep ewe and lamb as they were heading up the cliff by the road — we finally saw some stone sheep on our way south! :)

As we were approaching Summit Lake, we came upon a very cooperative young male woodland caribou by the road. He was just starting to shed his velvet, and we photographed him for a long time in various settings as he walked along the road and paused to feed. I started calling him "Mr. Boo" — short for "Mr. Caribou."

We left "Mr. Boo" and went by the east end of Summit Lake, then turned around and headed back.

We stopped to photograph the stone sheep ewe and lamb again. The ewe very quickly went into a little alcove which was convenient to remove the harsh mixed light. The lamb wandered around on its own for a while before joining its mother in the alcove where I was able to get this nice family portrait. We left shortly after the lamb laid down and the ewe's nose started to be in the sun.

We stopped to photograph a male and three female woodland caribou that were cooperative. One of the male's antler tines was broken (left), but he was still the most impressive male we had seen in the park, so maybe that's why he had three ladies with him.

We returned to the RV at 11:35. I downloaded the images I took this morning, then had lunch. I went up on the roof of the RV around 12:30 to tilt the solar-electric panels because the sun was directly out the driver's side. We went from getting about 17A to 29A. Because we use about 12-13A when running our computers, we went from gaining just a little electricity in our house batteries to gaining a lot! :) I worked up a blog entry and processed images for another blog entry. I went back up on the roof to de-tilt the solar-electric panels at 3:15 because the sun had moved far enough towards the front of the RV that tilting the panels was no longer helping. There was also a layer of high thin clouds to create some nice light for photographing wildlife. We left in the Jeep at 3:43.

We photographed a male and two female woodland caribou along the road with some nice fall color behind them. There weren't any stone sheep by the cliffs or across the valley. We turned around after going over the pass. No stone sheep on the way back either. We stopped to photograph two young woodland caribou with fall color in the background. We explored some side roads west of the park.

We returned to the RV at 5:30. I downloaded the images I took in the afternoon, then did a quick edit in iView. Somehow, I deleted all but one image (not what I wanted to do), so I got to rescue the images from the trash and then re-edit them. :( I showered, then started to make dinner of Bear Creek Creamy Potato Soup, a dry mix. J showered.

Had dinner at 6:35 of the Bear Creek Creamy Potato Soup, and J loved it. It's a soup that we both like, and she especially likes it when I cook.

I processed more images for the blog, then had some Bommerlunder Gold Jubiläums Akvavit while working up a blog entry.
