August 5, 2009, a Wednesday
Anchorage (Sam's Club) to Wasilla (D&RA), Alaska, USA
— Photographed a huge bull moose then went 'home'
We took it easy this morning because there was light rain. I did some computer work. We left at 10:57 with me in the RV and J following in the Jeep.

We went to Fred Meyers on Northern Lights Blvd at 11:08 to grocery shop. I came back out to the RV around 11:35 to do more computer work and J continued shopping. J came back to the RV around 12:27 as I was starting to make lunch. Did some more computer work. The rain stopped and it got a little brighter, so we left at 2:30 in the Jeep.

We drove around Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport looking for moose, and we found a huge bull! We stopped to photograph it right by the road, and soon lots of people were stopping. The moose was down among some very high grass and on the other side of some small trees from the road. I went down into the tall wet grass, and the view wasn't much better than from up on the road. After getting some decent images from down there with my 500 f4, I went back up to the road and started using my 100-400. After a while, an airport police patrol car pulled up and made an announcement that people with a vehicle on the road were to return to their vehicle and move it because they were blocking traffic. I kept photographing because the Jeep was parked completely off of the paved road surface. Next thing I knew, the two airport police officers were walking up to me and asked if I had heard them. I explained that I heard them, but our vehicle wasn't parked on the road so I didn't think they were talking to me. They explained that they really meant that vehicles were not allowed to park anywhere along the road, and I'd have to move the Jeep. Fortunately, J had already headed over to the Jeep, so she moved the Jeep to a nearby parking area and I explained to the nice officers that I still wasn't ignoring them and that my vehicle was being taken care of. The moose moved into a much better location, and I was able to capture the image to the left. Then an animal control person arrived and started to chase the moose away. His job is to keep animals off of the runway area, and the moose had been working his way towards the runway area. That pretty much ended the photography session with the moose, although we did follow it for a while hoping that it would return to a good setting again which it didn't. We left around 4:15.

We went to Kincaid Park to look for moose there. We stopped at Little Campbell Lake, and there were no moose and very few people too. We didn't see any moose on our way to the Kincaid Outdoor Center. A guy on a super-duper "scooter" said he had seen a moose not too far from the bridge, so we went to look for it. We didn't see it, so we left around 5:10.

We returned to the RV at Fred Meyers around 5:30. J wanted to have dinner from Wendy's instead of having me cook — OK. She also wasn't hungry right then, so we left in the RV to go dump around 6:10.

The Holiday gas station nearby, that was on J's list of free dump stations, was undergoing major construction, so we kept going to a Chevron gas station that MSN Autos had said had cheap gas. When we got there, the price had risen considerably, so we passed.

We returned to Fred Meyers around 6:30 and walked to the Wendy's at the corner. The staff was in disarray, and there was a whole bunch of people there ahead of us. A woman was standing right up at the pickup area, and she was demanding her Number 4 Value Meal (or whatever). The young guy behind the counter brought out some chicken nuggets (or something), and he asked her if she had ordered some chicken nuggets. She said she hadn't, she had ordered a Number 4. The young guy looked surprised, and said in his best cross-examination voice, "So, you did order some chicken nuggets." It took another 15 minutes or so for us to get our food, and we got comped a frosty at J's suggestion. :) We ate quickly in the RV, then I hooked up the Jeep. We left at 7:18 and started to head back to Wasilla.

We stopped at the Carrs grocery store on the northeast corner of town at 7:31 to gas up the RV. Carrs is connected with Safeway, and J's daughter E said we could use her gas discount. I was quite surprised, and happy, that it was a 30-cent discount to be applied to the $2.959/gal gas! :) We left at 7:42.

We stopped at the new Target just up the Glenn Highway to look for the Command toothbrush holder. They didn't have one. We left at 8:12.

We got to the Holiday gas station in Wasilla at 8:57 to use their free dump station. After dumping, we loaded up on propane.

We returned "home" to D & RA's around 9:45. After setting up camp, I put the slide out, and the RV interior looked huge! Boy was it nice to have a functional slide again! J had some Amarula and I had some Asbach Uralt while I worked on a blog entry. D & RA and Tootie got home around 10:15. RA had been away on a cruise when we were here before, and D and Tootie had gone down to Anchorage to pick up RA this evening. I went out and met RA who was pooped from her traveling.
