May 4, 2010, a Tuesday
Rabbit Valley BLM, Colorado, to near Goblin Valley State Park, Utah, USA
— Moved down the road
We took it easy this morning after the long drive yesterday. I had my normal breakfast then did some computer work. We got underway around 10:20 and continued heading west on I-70.

We entered Utah around 10:25 and I listened to an episode of Car Talk.

We stopped at the Post Office in Green River, Utah, around 11:45 to mail something. I took the opportunity to stretch my legs while J ran the item into the Post Office.

I had Clif Bars for lunch: Chocolate Peanut Crunch, Oatmeal Raisin Walnut, and Blueberry Crisp. We got on UT-24 around 12:05 heading south through the San Rafael Desert. The road went by some interesting rock formations to the west and through an area of reddish sand that reminded me of the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. We turned west onto Temple Mountain Road following the signs to Goblin Valley State Park. We kept going by the final turn to the park and continued into the San Rafael Reef, a wonderful rocky ridge. Neither J nor I had been to this area before, and we were enjoying it.

We found a nice spot to boondock and were level by 1:15. It was dusty and extremely windy. There was no Verizon nor AT&T cell signal, so we'll be without phone and internet while here. I did some computer work then processed RAW images in Capture One (C1) from earlier this year to adjust exposure and white balance and then create TIFF files after assigning final file names. I took a break and read through Photographing the Southwest, Vol. 1 to see what Laurent Martes says about photographing Goblin Valley and the surrounding area. I started to make dinner of Trader Joe's Pork Gyoza Potstickers and Trader Joe's Chicken Fried Rice. I used our small skillet to stir fry the fried rice, and it was just big enough. Next time I'll use our large skillet so the rice won't jump out of the pan as much.

We had dinner around 6:05. J liked the fried rice and wasn't too keen on the potstickers, but really liked that I had cooked dinner. I'm not much of a fan of fried rice, but it was good and went well with the potstickers that were very tasty.

After dinner, I processed more RAW images in Capture One (C1) from earlier this year to adjust exposure and white balance and then create TIFF files after assigning final file names. Then I worked up a blog entry and read some more of The Number of the Beast by Robert A. Heinlein before going to bed.
