Prince Frederick, Maryland, to Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA
— Visited my grandmother L
We got up, got ready, and I worked up a blog entry before going to the continental breakfast in the lobby. We had a choice of cinnamon-raisin bagels, apple Danish, cold cereals, oatmeal mix, OJ, and coffee. I had two cinnamon-raisin bagels with cream cheese, OJ, and coffee, and J had oatmeal, an apple Danish, OJ, and her own tea. We checked out and got underway at 9:40.
We continued heading north on MD-2 then got on US-301.
We stopped at the Jasper's Restaurant in Bowie for a short rest stop, then got gas at a 7-Eleven in town at $2.799/gal before getting on limited-access highways.
We got on I-97 then I-695 around Baltimore.
We reached my grandmother L's (my paternal step grandmother) in Cockeysville, Maryland, around 11:25. We visited for a while in her apartment, then we went to the dining room at the retirement community for a nice buffet. I started with a salad from the salad bar, then had some shrimp, then had some beef tenderloin that was excellent, a crab cake, a baked sweet potato, and some long-grain and wild rice. Crab cakes are a mid-Atlantic seaboard specialty, particularly around the Chesapeake Bay, and my stepfather ELG loved them. There was an assortment of cakes, pies, and ice cream for dessert, and I had a piece of chocolate cake with chocolate ice cream for dessert — mmm. After we finished eating, we went to the small auditorium next door for a concert by the Baltimore Choral Arts Society. L really enjoys the symphony and associated arts, and my mother sang in a choir most of her life, and they thoroughly enjoyed the concert. I didn't enjoy it quite as much because some of the selections were too modern for my taste. After the concert, we returned to L's apartment and J and I gave her some computer training. We visited some more, then left around 5:50 to head back "home."
We got back on I-695 then took MD-43 as a hypotenuse to get on I-95.
We stopped at the Chesapeake House rest area around 6:50 for a break and dinner. We got food from the Quiznos Sub stand (Classic Italian sub for me, and brocolli soup for J and my mother), and ate in the food court seating area. We got underway again around 7:25.
We entered Delaware at 7:40. Shortly after we got on I-495 to go around Wilmington, my mother asked, "Where's all the traffic?" In just a couple of minutes, we hit the traffic and we were completely stopped for 25 minutes! Then we crawled along for about 15 minutes before resuming normal highway speeds. The unexpected stop interrupted our scheduled hourly stops, so we got off at an exit so my mother could stretch her back. We got underway again, and entered Pennsylvania at 8:52. By the time we got on I-476, there was steady rain.
We dropped off my mother at her apartment.
We returned to the B&B around 10:45 — a long day.
